This image gives the idea of the First Holy Communion an interesting twist. What about the first communion with yourself as an other?
She is trying hard not to look at her mirror images by looking into that book which will fix her identity.

There is a photographers blind stamp in the lower right corner:

I read: "H Raffaelli / S PAULO". But I could not find any information about this photographer. Perhaps the name is Roffaells, or Poffaelli, or Taffaelli or the town is not Sao Paulo in Brazil. If you have any information or other photos like this please contact me.

The Photograph of the Future.
“A photograph that flatters will soon be a thing of the past,” said a photographer the other day. “It will be impossible to make our faces appear to the most advantage by a clever pose, for the latest innovation in photography, the multiphotograph, which is destined to become the photographic portrait of the future, will reveal all our defects and crudities. The great study which young women give their faces, to find out in which position – side, three-quarter or full face – they look the best, will all be put to naught, for the multiphotograph will take them in all these positions and others as well.
“The process makes it possible to obtain a perfect likeness of a person, as one is able to see the face and head in all possible positions and can thus get all the characteristics. This new effect is obtained by mirrors being placed at certain angles, When a person stands in front of the glasses, his likeness is reflected from 6 to 12 times, according to the arrangement of the mirrors, each image being in a different position, so that the same effect is obtained that would be secured if you were to walk around a person, viewing him from all sides and points.
“The operator photographs the subject and the reflections in the mirrors. The result is the multiphotograph. I think it is destined to become the photograph of the future, as it is the only thing that will give you a likeness of a person as seen from all sides. Art in this case must succumb to nature, and the instruction that is too frequently given the photographer, ‘Make me as pretty as you can,’ will have to be done away with.” – Pittsburg Dispatch.

"Photography has almost always been in crisis. In the beginning, the terms of this crisis were cast as dichotomies: is photography science or art? Nature or technology? Representation or truth? This questioning has intensified and become more complicated over the intervening years. At times, the issues have required a profound rethinking of what photography is, does, and means. This is one of those times. Given the nature of contemporary art practice, the condition of visual culture, the advent of new technologies, and many other factors, what is at stake today in seeing something as a photograph? What is the value of continuing to speak of photography as a specific practice or discipline? Is photography over?
As part of its yearlong festivities celebrating the museum's 75th anniversary, SFMOMA has invited a range of major thinkers and practitioners to write brief responses to this question and then to convene in San Francisco for a two-day summit on the state of the medium. The texts, available at

will be used to kick off the symposium's opening panel discussion at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 22. SFMOMA was one of the first institutions to recognize the photography as an art form and has been collecting and exhibiting photographs since the museum's founding in 1935. The museum is dedicated to the examination of the medium in all its forms and in that spirit, we will present the U.S. debut of a major survey that examines photography's role in invasive looking. Exposed: Voyeurism, Surveillance and the Camera Since 1870, from October 30, 2010 through April 17, 2011, is co-organized by SFMOMA and Tate Modern, and gathers more than 200 pictures that together form a timely inquiry into the ways in which artists and everyday people alike have probed the camera's powerful voyeuristic capacity. Works by major artists, including Brassaï, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Walker Evans, Nan Goldin, Lee Miller, Thomas Ruff, Paul Strand, and Weegee will be presented alongside photographs made by amateurs, professional journalists, and governmental agencies, exploring the larger cultural significance of voyeurism and surveillance technology. Dr. Ricardo Fernández Romero wrote me concerning the inscription:
It is an adaptation of a popular expression or saying in Spanish, with comical tone. The meaning would be something like: “Now that you’ve asked for more I will give you plenty of it, more than you asked for, actually [three instead of just one more portion]”. The author of the writing is making a joke after the saying, since the original expression in Spanish uses the number 3, not the number 5, increasing the exaggeration implicit in the original saying. In other words, the joke from the part of the man in the photograph is about the idea of sending not just one picture of him, or three, but five, in case the correspondent would not have had enough with just one. It is written with a tone of sort of playful and not aggressive vanity. Literal translation of the writing on the postcard would be: Didn’t you want some broth? Here’s three, I mean, five cups for you.

Die große 4 auf den Schulterklappen, das auffällige, spitz zulaufende Dekor der Manschetten, die Doppelreihe der Knöpfe mit einem horizontalen Balken reichen vielleicht für eine Identifizierung aus. Möglicherweise ist an der linken Seite ein Degen- oder Säbelgriff zu erkennen. Die Barttracht könnte wilhelminisch sein. Experten der Uniformkunde mögen sich melden.

MULTIPHOTOGRAPHY.
A very pretty system of photography, enabling us to see ourselves as others see us, and affording opportunity for much range in the art of posing, is the multiphotograph. If an image is placed in front of two mirrors inclined to each other at an angle of 90°, three images will be produced in the mirror; at 60°, five images will be produced; and at 45° seven images; and if the mirrors are parallel, theoretically an infinite number of images will result.
In the process of photography which we illustrate advantage is taken of this to produce at one exposure a number of different views of the same subject. The person to be photographed sits with the back to the instrument, while in front of the face are two mirrors, set at the desired angle to each other, their inner edges touching. In the case illustrated these mirrors are inclined at an angle of 72°. Four images are produced. The exposure is made, and on the developed negative appear not only the back view of the subject, but also the four reflected images in profile and different three-quarter positions. The courses taken by the rays of light are determined by the law that the angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection. In the diagram we have traced the rays of light on their course from subject to mirror and back to the camera, giving a good idea of the relation of the images to the subject and of the five images to the focal plane, the virtual position of the images being further from the instrument than is the subject proper.
The gallery equipment for this class of work is shown in one of the views, while the appearance presented by a full length figure with the aid of the mirrors is shown in another cut. A very interesting illustration of what can be done by this process is presented by the reproduction of a photograph actually taken, where the interesting expression and marked characteristics of the face serve to bring into strong prominence the utility of this process for representing the human face.
It is obvious that simple as the process and idea appear, it might have many uses in the study of other forms of nature.

The photo belongs to the family papers of her great granddaughter. She wrote to me:
"My great grandmother got married in 1907. It means that the photo was made later. [Because of the ring on her finger]. She worked in a photographic studio of Julius Steinberg in St.-Petersburg on Nevski Prospect. My great grandfather worked there too. When they got married they rent a house in Terrioki (it was Finland then) and there they made there own photographic studio. As I learned they also had a photographic studio in Kuokkala.
